100 Years since Väinö Linna’s birth

The newest Finnish special two euro coin celebrates the centennial of our national author, Academician Väinö Linna, born in December 1920.

Linna in profile dominates the averse of the coin. The arcs in the background are like threads from which Linna – who had worked at a textile mill after the war – spun the plots of his works. The coin was designed by Architect Petri Neuvonen.

Väinö Linna was born on 20 December 1920 in Urjala. Born in humble circumstances, he became a successful author as well as a shaper of public opinion. Linna’s most famous works, the novel The Unknown Soldier,(1954) the Under the North Star trilogy (1959‒ 1962), are unique descriptions of the Finnish society through seven decades.

Thanks to these two successful works Linna became a national author, whose exuberant humour and earthy dialogue renewed the language of Finnish literature.
