Homage to Education
The newest Finnish commemorative coin is a homage to education and the centennial of the University of Turku. The pictorial subject of the harmonic coin is a grid-like network that on an abstract level symbolizes the interaction between universities and society. The coin was designed by Architect Petri Neuvonen.

This the first Finnish university in Finland and the world was funded in a very exceptional manner, through a fund-raising campaign. The motto of the university, founded on Kalevala Day, 28 February, 1920, “From a Free People to Free Science” reflects the spirit of the new independent republic and the will of the 22,000 donors.
The teaching, research and science conducted at universities has greatly influenced the development and history of Finnish society. They have created the prerequisites for our welfare state, for increased productivity and internationalisation.
