This 2022 joint European issue honours the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus programme. The European Union’s financial programme for education, youth and sport provides opportunities for internationalisation and funding for study and training abroad. Millions of Europeans have already participated in the programme since 1987, its year of introduction.

The distinctive feature of the special euro combines two key elements of the Erasmus programme: the programme’s source of intellectual inspiration, Erasmus of Rotterdam, together with the rays of light that reflect the interaction between students.

The proof coins favoured by collectors are minted individually, with the highest quality stamps. Many special work stages as well as manual labour are included in their manufacture.  The coins are distinguished by their glass-like background, creating a beautiful foundation for the matte illustration.

Joint European issues have previously been realised four times: Treaty of Rome: 50th anniversary 2007, EMU: 10th anniversary 2009, Euro banknotes and coins: 10th anniversary 2012 and EU flag: 2015. The 35th anniversary of the Erasmus programme 2022 is consequently the fifth joint European issue.
