Gold coin to celebrate nature conservation
The Nature Conservation Act is one of the most important ways to safeguard Finnish biodiversity. Its importance was already recognised a hundred years ago.
Finland’s first Nature Conservation Act, enacted in 1923, was ahead of its time and is still central to the 100-year-old act.
- Finland´s only gold coin of the year
- Genuine 91.7 % gold
- Glassy proof quality favoured by collectors
- The lowest maximum mintage in history, only 800 pcs
The beetle (Tragosoma depsarium) shown on the reverse side of the coin reminds us of the importance of nature conservation. The species, a member of the longhorn beetle family, is classified as extremely endangered in Finland. Beetles mediate activities at multiple levels within natural ecosystems and are important to their functioning.
The rotten wood on the obverse side depicts a natural habitat of many species. Decomposing wood is needed, for example, by fungi, mosses, lichens, birds and beetles including T. depsarium.
The pictoral theme of the commemorative coin has been designed by the artist Sandra Prami from Helsinki.
The gold coin will be made available on 23 February 2023, as decreed by the Minister of Finance.
